How long can my low voltage cable runs be for each cable tap?

If using 12/2 cable, you can do up to 3 separate runs of 263 ft (80 m) max. for each cable tap of the Source transformer.

The maximum length of the cable runs you can do per cable tap will vary depending on the thickness of the low voltage cable you are using (10/2, 12/2 or 14/2).

For optimal results, we recommend professionals to use 12/2 cable when installing BOLD. Source transformers have 3 cable taps, meaning you can connect up to 3 separate cable runs per transformer.

To ensure a reliable connection between the transformer and fixtures without any voltage drops, follow this rule of thumb when calculating the length of your cable runs:

  • 10/2 cable: 328 feet (100 meters) for cable tap.
  • 12/2 cable (recommended): 263 feet (80 meters) per cable tap (up to 3 separate runs).
  • 14/2 cable: not compatible with BOLD's Cobra Connector, we advise against using this type of low voltage cable for BOLD lighting projects.

*this is a recommendation based on the performance of BOLD's Source transformer, these limitations might not apply to other transformers in the market.
