Volt-Amps are a standard metric used to measure the potential or total power a lighting fixture can draw from a transformer.
In outdoor lighting, Volt-Amps (VAs) represent the total or potential power a fixture can draw off a low voltage transformer. They are used to simplify power ratings and calculate how many lighting fixtures you can actually connect to one transformer.
*Please note: When choosing the transformer you will need for a project, you should always calculate based on total or potential capacity, which is why we recommend professionals to always count Volt-Amps (VA) instead of Watts. Volt-Amps are a measure of consumption, not a measure of light output, and should not be used as a way to anticipate light output or how bright a fixture will be.*
